Timeless Sophistication

A modern aesthetic in a traditional inspired home

Creating spaces all on one level can be challenging for a ranch layout but this design pushes a new envelope. Living spaces need to be open and spacious for entertaining. The challenge for designing a single-story home was creating a design that was more than a box of rooms within the lot’s perimeter. Builder Jason Koelker embellished the home with traditional detailing and an unique design ready for entertaining.

“The challenge of building a ranch is ensuring spaces are not only open but also have light,” says Koelker. “We needed an efficient home not just in terms of the layout, but also in terms of finishes for today’s modern lifestyle.”

Vaulted ceilings create a dramatic entry framing the central living spaces within the quaint and cozy ranch. Craftsman style adheres to its heritage with features such as a handscraped mantle and stone fireplace surround, adding a natural element to the

minimalist design. Contrasting the traditional features, chic and modern details focus on a crisp contemporary scheme. Maple hardwood flooring is juxtaposed with modern light fixtures creating cosmopolitan reality. Clean-lined Craftsman trim and white cabinetry with a dark-stained island and light tones complement the attention to detail throughout.

Koelker wanted a design that would showcase these finishes. Tall windows were essentially to let light flow into the home, allowing rooms to have windows on multiple walls. The integration of the loggia was extremely important—providing a seamless connection between indoors and out while providing light to the dining and kitchen areas.

Dividing the kitchen and living spaces is a sitting area. With a central sitting area as the centerpiece to the open-plan living space, the home invites entertaining. The layout encourages relaxed gatherings where rooms flow into one another allowing for a variety of interactions. The large kitchen works as an extension of this with its location between the living and dining areas. Koelker decided to emphasize the kitchen in the center using contrasting colors and a variety of materials in its design. The island is a dark-stained cabinet with light-colored quartz counters while the wall cabinets are painted white. Glass tiles are a tribute to traditional design while emphasizing modern materials. The sleek, streamlined look of the kitchen is also enhanced by the modern-styled stainless appliances including a vent hood that has an exhaust to the exterior.

Koelker added a vaulted ceiling to the living and kitchen space to enhance dramatic impact. Horizontally matched white floating shelving in the sitting area continue the kitchen cabinets into the living areas. The area is perfect for a barista and beverage buffet featuring a built-in beverage refrigerator. The upper cabinet is also a glass shelf for showcasing glasses.

The lower level was designed for relaxing. A large family-room area in an L-shaped design has a wet bar.  Modern finishes paired with traditional materials pay homage to past and present architecture in a home designed for today’s convenience. The lower level is a walkout continuing the living spaces to the outdoors. This thoughtfully planned home offers value in a thoughtful design with outside spaces suitable for a variety of living activities and memorable entertaining.  “The emphasis here is on simplicity and visual consistency—we have used the same palette of materials throughout the house.”
